WHAT IS OKTAM?

OKTAM (ONDOKUZ MAYIS UNIVERSITY THE APPLICATION AND RESEARCH CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF WOMEN AND SOCIETY)
The studies on gender and society have gained importance in Samsun, Turkey, such as the other cities around the world. Since 2010, our application and research center for the study of women and society, OKTAM, has started to serve in this new, interdisciplinary and challenging area.
As an interdisciplinary approach, OKTAM has some sub working groups in the fields of Education, Culture and Art, Health, Law and Employment, Religion and Media. By the help of these sub groups, some panels and workshops are held throughout the year.
OKTAM also made some projects with the Governorship of Samsun. These projects were about Child Crime, Suicide and Women Health in various parts of Samsun.
After 2011, with the foundation of a master’s program in the field of Gender Studies, the center started to be known better. The general aim of the program is to offer critical reflection on women in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, class, administration, politics, education, economics, etc.; to evaluate the differences in gender from a historical perspective, to determine and to offer solutions to the financial and political inequality between men and women, to carry out the researches on gender in the fields of philosophy, religion and literature and to examine the status of women in society. Our program currently has over 40 students from different fields.
